First Intermediate Day

17th Tishri

Sh’mot (Exodus) 33:12 – 34:26

12Moshe said to HaShem, “See, You say to me, ‘Take this people onward,’ but You did not inform me whom You will send with me; and You had said, ‘I shall know you by name, and you have also found favor in My eyes.’ 13And now, if I have indeed found favor in Your eyes, make Your way known to me, so that I know You, so that I may find favor in Your eyes. And see that this nation is Your people.”

14He said, “Me Presence will go and provide you rest.”

15He said to Him, “If Your Presence does not go along, do not bring us forward from here. 16How, then, will it be known that I have found favor in Your eyes – I and Your people – unless You accompany us, and I and Your people will be made distinct from every people on the face of the earth!”

17HaShem said to Moshe, “Even this thing of which you spoke I shall do, for you have found favor in My eyes, and I have known you by name.”

18He said, “Show me now Your glory.”

19He said, “I shall make all My goodness pass before you, and I shall call out with the Name HaShem before you; I shall show favor when I choose to show favor, and I shall show mercy when I choose to show mercy.”

20He said, “You will not be able to see My face, for no human can see Me and live.” 21HaShem said, “Behold! there is a place near Me; you may stand on the rock. 22When My glory passes by, I shall place you in a cleft of the rock; I shall shield you with My hand until I have passed. 23Then I shall remove My hand and you will see My back, but My face may not be seen.”

Chapter 34
1HaShem said to Moshe, “Carve for yourself two stone Tablets like the first ones, and I shall inscribe on the Tablets the words that were on the first Tablets, which you shattered. 2Be prepared in the morning; ascend Mount Sinai in the morning and stand by Me there on the mountaintop. 3No man may ascend with you nor may anyone be seen on the entire mountain. Even the flock and the cattle may not graze facing the mountain.”

4So he carved out two stone Tablets like the first ones. Moshe arose early in the morning and ascended to Mount Sinai, as HaShem had commanded him, and he took two stone Tablets in his hand.

5HaShem descended in a cloud and stood with him there, and He called out with the Name HaShem. 6HaShem passed before him and proclaimed: HaShem, HaShem, G-d, Compassionate and Gracious, Slow to Anger, and Abundant in Kindness and Truth; 7Preserver of Kindness for thousands of generations, Forgiver of Iniquity, Willful Sin, and Error, and Who Cleanses – but does not cleanse completely, recalling the iniquity of parents upon children and grandchildren, to the third and fourth generations.

8Moshe hastened to bow his head toward the ground and prostrate himself. 9He said, “If I have now found favor in Your eyes, my L-rd, let my L-rd go among us – for it is a stiff-necked people, and You shall forgive our iniquity and error, and make us Your heritage.”

10He said, “Behold! I seal a covenant: Before your entire people I shall make distinctions such as have never been created in the entire world and among all the nations; and the entire people among whom you are will see the work of HaShem – which is awesome – that I am about to do with you.

11“Beware of what I command you today: Behold I drive out before you the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Perizzite, the Hivvite, and the Jebusite. 12Be vigilant lest you seal a covenant with the inhabitant of the land to which you come, lest it be a snare among you. 13Rather you shall break apart their altars, smash their pillars, and cut down its sacred trees. 14For you shall not prostrate yourselves to an alien god, for the very Name HaShem is ‘Jealous One,’ He is a jealous G-d. 15Lest you seal a covenant with the inhabitant of the land, and they will stray after their gods and slaughter to their gods; and he will invite you and you will eat from his slaughter. 16And you will take their daughters for your sons, and their daughters will stray after their gods and entice your sons to stray after their gods!

17“You shall not make for yourselves molten gods.

18“You shall observe the festival of Matzos: For a seven-day period you shall eat matzos, as I commanded you, at the appointed time in the month of spring, for in month of spring you went forth from Mitzrayim.

19“Every first issue of a womb is Mine; as well as any of your livestock that produces a male, the first issue of an ox or a sheep. 20The first issue of a donkey you shall redeem with a lamb or kid, and if you do not redeem it you shall axe the back of its neck. You shall redeem every firstborn of your sons. They shall not appear before Me emptyhanded.

21“Six days shall you do work and on the seventh day you shall desist; you shall desist from plowing and harvesting. 22You shall make the Festival of Weeks with the first offering of the wheat harvest; and the Festival of the Harvest shall be at the changing of the year. 23Three times a year all your males shall appear before the L-rd HaShem, the G-d of Yisra’el. 24For I shall banish nations before you and broaden your boundary; no man will covet your land when you go up to appear before HaShem, your G-d, three times a year.

25“You shall not slaughter My blood-offering while in the possession of leavened food, nor may the feast-offering of the Pesach festival be left overnight until morning. 26The first of your land’s early produce you shall bring to the Temple of HaShem, your G-d. Do not cook a kid in its mother’s milk.”

BaMidbar (Numbers) 29:17 – 25
17And on the second day: twelve young bulls, two rams, fourteen male lambs within their first year, unblemished. 18And their meal-offering and their libations for the bulls, the rams, and the lambs, in their proper numbers, as required. 19One male of the goats for a sin-offering; aside from the continual elevation-offering, its meal-offering and their libations.

20And on the third day: eleven bulls, two rams, fourteen male lambs within their first year, unblemished. 21And their meal-offering and their libations for the bulls, the rams, and the lambs, in their proper numbers, as required. 22One he-goat for a sin-offering; in addition to the continual elevation-offering, its meal-offering and its libation.

23And on the fourth day: ten bulls, two rams, fourteen male lambs within their first year, unblemished. 24And their meal-offering and their libations for the bulls, the rams, and the lambs, in their proper numbers, as required. 25One male of the goats for a sin-offering; in addition to the continual elevation-offering, its meal-offering and its libation.

Yechezkel (Ezekiel) 38:18 – 39:16
18It shall be on that day that on the day that Gog comes against he soil of Yisra’el – the word of the L-rd HaShem, Tsevaot, – My raging anger will fare up; 19for in My vengefulness, in the fire of My fury, I have spoken: [I swear] that on that day a great earthquake will take place upon the soil of Yisra’el. 20They will quake before Me – the fish of the sea, the bird of the heavens the beast of the field, every creeping thing that creeps on the ground and every human being that is on the face of the earth; the mountains will be broken apart and the cliffs will topple, and every wall will topple to the ground. 21I will summon the sword against him to all My mountains – the word of the L-rd HaShem, Tsevaot – each man’s sword will be against his brother. 22I will punish him with pestilence and with blood; torrential rain and hailstones, fire and sulfur will I rain down upon him and upon him and upon his cohorts and upon the many peoples who are with him. 23I will be exalted and I will be sanctified, and I will make Myself known before the eyes of many nations; then they will know that I am HaShem.”

Chapter 39
1”Now you, Son of Man, prophecy against God. Say:
Thus said the L-rd HaShem, Tsevaot: Behold, I am against you, Gog, the prince, leader of Meshech and Tubal! 2I will lead you astray and seduce you; I will cause you to ascend from the uttermost north and bring you upon the mountains of Yisra’el. 3I will strike you bow from your left hand, and cast down your arrows from your right hand. 4You will fall upon the mountains of Yisra’el, you and all your cohorts and the peoples that are with you; I will give you to the bird of prey, to every winged bird, and to the beast of the field as food. 5You will fall upon the open field, for I have spoken – the word of the L-rd HaShem, Tsevaot. 6I will dispatch a fire against Magog and against those who dwell confidently in the islands, and they will know that I am HaShem. 7I will make My holy Name known among My people Yisra’el, and I will not desecrate My holy Name any longer; then the nations will know that I am HaShem, the Holy One in Yisra’el. 8Behold, it is coming and it will happen – the word of the L-rd HaShem, Tsevaot – that is the day of which I have spoken.

9Then the inhabitants of the cities of Yisra’el will go out and kindle fires and fuel them with their weaponry – shield and buckler, with bow and with arrows, with mace and with spear; they will fuel fires with them for seven years. 10They will not carry wood from the field, and they will not cut it from the forests, for they will fuel fires with the weaponry. They will plunder those who had plundered them and despoil those who had despoiled them – the word of the L-rd HaShem, Tsevaot.

11It shall be on that day that I will assign Gog a burial site there in Yisra’el – the Valley of the Passersby, east of the Sea; it will block the passersby, and there they will bury Gog and all his multitude, and call it the Valley of Hamon-gog (Gog’s Multitude). 12The House of Yisra’el will bury them in order to cleanse the land, for seven months. 13All people of the land will bury, and it will bring them renown; on the day that I manifest My glory – the word of the L-rd HaShem, Tsevaot. 14They will designate permanent officials to pass through the land, burying, together with the passersby, those that remain upon the open field, to cleanse [the land]. After seven months, they will [begin to] search. 15The passersby will traverse the land and when they see a human bone, they will build a marker near it, until the buriers bury it in the Valley of Hamon-gog. 16There will also be a city call Hamonah (Her Multitude). Thus they will cleanse the land.
