II Melachim (Kings) 4:37

1A certain woman from among the wise of the disciples of the prophets cried out to Elisha, saying, “Your servant, my husband, has died and you know that your servant was G-d-fearing–now the creditor has come to take my two sons to be his slaves.”

2Elisha said to her, “What can I do for you–Tell me, what have you in the house?”

She answered, “Your maidservant has nothing in the house except for a cruse of oil.”

3He said, “Go borrow vessels for yourself from the outside–from all your neighbors–empty vessels, do not be sparing.” 4Then go in and shut the door behind you and behind your children; pour into all these vessels and remove each full one.”

5She left him and shut the door behind her and behind her children. They brought her the vessels and she poured. 6When all the vessels were full she said her son, “Bring me another vessel.”

He said to her, “There is not another vessel,” and the oil stopped.

7She came and told the man of G-d, and he said, “Go and sell the oil and pay your creditors, and you and your sons will live on the remainder.”

8It happened one day that Elisha traveled to Shunem. A prominent woman was there and she importuned him to eat a meal; so it was it whenever he passed by, he would turn there to eat a meal. 9She said her husband, “Behold now–I know that he is a holy man of G-d who passes by use regularly. 10Let us now make a small walled attic and placed there for him a bed, a table, a chair, and a lamp, so whenever he comes to us, he can turn there.”

11It happened one day that he came there, and turned to the attic and lay down there. 12He said to Gehazi his sort his attendant, “Summon this Shunammite woman.” He summoned her and she stood before him. 13He said to him, “Say to her now, ‘Behold– you have shown us this great solicitude; what can be done for you? Can something be said on your behalf to the king or the army commander?” She said, “I dwell among my people.”

14So he said, “What can be done for her?”

Gehazi said, “But she has no child, and her husband is old.”

15He said, “Summon her,” so he summoned her and she stood in the doorway. 16He said, “At this season next year you will be embracing a son.”

She said, “Do not my master, O man of G-d, do not deceive your maidservant!”

17The woman conceived and bore a son of that season the next year, of which Elisha had spoken to her.

18The child grew up in it happened one dated he went out to his father to the reapers. 19He said to his father, “My head! My head!”

His father said to the attendant, “Carry him to his mother.”

20He carried him and brought him to his mother; he sat on her lap until noon, and he died. 21She went up and laid them on the bed of the man of G-d, shut the door upon him and left.

22Then she called her husband said, “Please send me one of the attendants and one of the asses so that I can hurry to the man of G-d and return.”

23He said, “Why are you going to him today? It is not a New Moon or Shabbat!”

She said, “All is well.”

24She saddled the ass and said to her attendant, “drive and go, and do not impede me from riding unless I tell you.” 25She went and came to the man of G-d at Mount Carmel.

When the man of G-d saw her from afar, he said to Gehazi, his attendant, “Behold!–it is that Shunammite woman. 26Now, please run toward her and say to her, ‘Is it well with your husband? Is it well with the child?”

And she said, “All is well.”

27She came to the man of G-d, at the mountain and grasped his legs; Gehazi approached to push her off but, the man of G-d said, “Leave her for her soul is embittered, but HaShem has hidden it from me and not told me.”

28She said, “Did I request a son of my master? Did I not say, ‘Do not mislead me!?”

29He said to Gehazi, “Gird your loin–take my staff in your hand and go; if you meet a man, do not greet him, and of the man greets you, do not respond to him. Place my staff upon the lad’s face.”

30The lad’s mother said, “As HaShem lives, I will not leave you!” So he stood up and followed her.

31Gehazi went before them and place the staff on the lad’s face, but there was no sound and nothing was heard. He returned toward him and told him, saying, “The lad has not awakened.”

32Elisha came into the house and behold!–the lad was dead, laid out on his bed. 33He entered and shut the door behind them behind them both, and prayed to HaShem. 34Then went up and lay upon the lad, and placed his mouth upon his mouth, his eyes upon his eyes, his palms upon his palms, and prostrated himself upon him, and he warmed the flesh of the lad. 35He withdrew and walked about the house, once this way and once that way, then he went up and prostrated himself upon him; the lad sneezed seven times, and the lad opened his eyes.

36He called to Gehazi and said, “Summon this Shunammite woman.” He summoned her and she came to him; he said, “Pick up your son!”

37She came and fell at his feet and bowed down to the ground; and she picked up her son and left.
