BaMidbar (Numbers) 1:1–19
1HaShem spoke to Moshe in the Wilderness of Sinai, in the Tent of Meeting, on the first of the second month, in the second year after the exodus from the land of Mitzrayim (Egypt), saying: 2“Take a census of the entire assembly of the Children of Yisra’el according to their families, according to their fathers’ household, by number of the names, every male according to their head count. 3From twenty years of age and up, — everyone who goes out to the host in Yisra’el, — you shall count them according to their legions, you and Aharon. 4And with you shall be one man from each tribe; a man who is a leader of his father’s household”. 5“These are the names of the men who shall stand with you; for R’uven, Elitsur ben She’de’ur; 6for Shimon, She’lu’miel ben Tsuri’shadai; 7for Yehudah, Nach’shon ben Ami’nadav; 8for Yisachar, Ne’tan’el ben Tsu’ar; 9for Zevu’lun, Eli’av ben Che’lon. 10For the children of Yosef, for Efrayim, Elishama ben Ami’hud; for Menashe, Gamli’el ben Peda’tsur. 11For Binyimin, Avidan, ben Gidoni. 12For Dan, Achi’ezer ben Ami’shaddai. 13For Asher, Pagiel ben of Ochran. 14For Gad, Elyasaf ben De’uel. 15For Naftali, Achira ben Einan. 16These were the ones summoned by the assembly, the leaders of their fathers tribes, they were the heads of Yisra’el’s thousands.” 17Moshe and Aharon took these men who had been designated by name. 18They gathered together the entire assembly on the first of the second month, and they established their genealogy according to their families, according to their father’s household, by number of the names, from twenty years of age and up, according to their head count. 19As HaShem had commanded Moshe, he counted them in the Wilderness of Sinai.
