1These are the offspring of Aharon and Moshe on the day HaShem spoke with Moshe at Mount Sinai; 2These are the names of the sons of Aharon, the firstborn was Nadav, and Avihu, El’azar, and It’amar. 3These are the names of the sons of Aharon, the anointed Kohanim, whom he inaugurated to minister. 4Nadav and Avihu died before HaShem when they offered an alien fire before HaShem in the Wilderness of Sinai, and they had no children; but El’azar and It’amar ministered during the time of Aharon, their father.
5HaShem spoke to Moshe saying, 6“Bring near the tribe of Levi and have it stand before Aharon the Kohen, and they shall serve him. 7They shall safeguard his charge and the charge of the entire assembly before the Tent of Meeting, to perform the service of the Tabernacle. 8They shall safeguard all the utensils of the Tent of Meeting and the charge of the Children of Yisra’el, to perform the service of the Tabernacle. 9You shall present the Levi’im to Aharon and his sons – presented, presented are they to him – from the Children of Yisra’el. 10You shall appoint Aharon and his sons and they shall safeguard the priesthood; and the alien who approaches will die.”
11HaShem spoke to Moshe, saying, 12“Behold! I have taken the Levi’im from among the Children of Yisra’el, in place of every firstborn, the first issue of every womb among the Children of Yisra’el, and the Levi’im shall be Mine. 13For every firstborn is Mine: On the day I struck down every firstborn in the land of Mitzrayim I sanctified every firstborn in Yisra’el for Myself, from man to beast; they shall be Mine – I am HaShem.
