Parsha BaMidbar Aliyah 5

BaMidbar 3:14-39

14HaShem spoke to Moshe in the Wilderness of Sinai, saying, 15“Count the sons of Levi according to their fathers’ household, according to their families, every male from one month of age and up shall you count them.”  16Moshe counted them according to the Word of HaShem, as he had been commanded.

17These were the sons of Levi, by their names: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. 18These were the names of the sons of Gershon according to their families: Libni and Shimei. 19The sons of Kohath according to their families were Amram and Izhar, Hebron and Uzzi’el. 20The sons of Merari according to their families were Mahli and Mushi. These were the families of the Levi’im, according to their fathers’ household.

21Gershon and the family of the Libnites and the family of the Shimeites; these were the Gershonite families. 22Their count according to the number of every male, from one month of age and up; their count was seven thousands, five hundred. 23The Gershonite families would encamp behind the Tabernacle, to the west. 24The leader of the father’s household of the Gershonites was Eliasaph son of La’el. 25The charge of the sons of Gershon in the Tent of Meeting was the Tabernacle, the Tent, its Cover, the Screen of the entrance of the Tent of Meetings; 26the curtains of the Courtyard, the Screen of the entrance of the Courtyard that surrounded the Tabernacle and the Altar, and its ropes — for all its labor.

27Kohath had the family of the Amramites, the family of the Izharites, the family of the Hebronites, and the family of the Uzzi’el’ites; these were the Kohathite families. 28The number of every male from one month of age and up was eight thousand, six hundred; the guardians of the charge of the sanctity. 29The families of the children of Kohath would encamp on the side of the Tabernacle, to the south. 30The leaders of the father’s household of the Kohathite families was Elizaphan son of Uzzi’el. 31Their charge was the Ark, the Table, the Menorah, the Altars and the sacred utensils with which they would minister, the Partition and all its accessories.

32The leader of the Levi’im leaders was El’azar son of Aharon the Kohen, the assignment of the guardians of the charge of the sanctity.

33Merari had the family of the Mahlites and the family of the Mushites; these were the Merarite families.   34Their count according to the number of every male from one month of age and up was six thousand, two hundred. 35The leader of the father’s household of the Merarite families was Zuri’el son of Abihail; they would encamp on the side of the Tabernacle, to the north. 36The assignment of the charge of the sons of Merari was the planks of the Tabernacle, its bars, its pillars, its sockets and all its utensils, and all its accessories. 37The pillars of the Courtyard all around and their sockets, their pegs and their ropes.

38Those who encamped before the Tabernacle to the front, before the Tent of Meeting to the east, were Moshe and Aharon and his sons, guardians of the change of the Sanctuary, for the charge of the Children of Yisra’el; any alien who approaches shall die.

39All the countings of the Levi’im, which Moshe and Aharon counted by the Word of HaShem according to their families, every male from one month of age and up, were twenty-two thousand.
