Parsha Masei Aliyah 6

Masei (Numbers) 35:9-34

9HaShem spoke to Moshe, saying, 10“Speak to the Children of Yisra’el and say to them” “When you cross the Yarden to the land of Can’an, 11you shall designate cities for yourselves, cities of refuge shall they be for you, and a killer shall be able to flea there — one who takes a life unintentionally. 12The cities shall be for you a refuge from the avenger of blood, so that the killer will not die until he stands before the assembly for judgment. 13As to the cities shall you designate, there shall be six cities of refuge for you. 14Three cities shall you designate on the other side of the Yarden, and three cities shall you designate in the land of Can’an; they shall be cities of refuge. 15For the Children of Yisra’el and the proselyte and resident among them shall these six cities be a refuge, for anyone who kills a person unintentionally to flee there.

16If he had struck him with an iron implement and he died, he is a killer; the killer shall surely be put to death. 17Or if with a hand-sized stone by which one could die did he strike him, and he died, he is a killer; the killer shall surely be put to death. 18Or if he struck him with a hand-sized wood implement by which one could die, and he died, he is a killer; the killer shall surely be put to death. 19The avenger of the blood, he shall put the killer to death; when he encounters him, he shall put him to death. 20If he pushed him out of hatred of hurled upon him from ambush, and he died; 21or in enmity struck him with his hand and he died, the assailant shall surely be put to death, he is a killer; the avenger of the blood shall  put the killer to death when he encounters him.

22But if with suddenness, without enmity, did he push him, or he hurled any implement upon him without any ambush; 23or with any stone through which one could die, with out having seen, and caused it to fall upon him and he died — but he was not his enemy and did not seek his harm — 24then the assembly shall judge between the assailant and the avenger of the blood, according to these laws. 25The assembly shall rescue the killer from the hand of the avenger of the blood, and the assembly shall return him to his city of refuge where he had fled; he shall dwell in it until the death of the Kohen Gadol, whom one had anointed with the sacred oil. 26But if the killer will leave the border of the city of refuge to which he had fled, 27and the avenger of the blood shall find him outside of the border of his city of refuge, and the avenger of the blood will kill the killer — he has no blood guilt. 28For the killer must dwell in the city of refuge until the death of the Kohen Gadol, and after the death of the Kohen Gadol the killer shall return to the land of his possession.

29These shall be for you a decree of justice for your generations, in all your dwelling places. 30Whoever smites a person, according to the testimony of witnesses shall one kill the killer, but a single witness shall not testify against a person regarding death.

31You shall not accept ransom for the life of a killer who is worthy of death, for he shall surely be put to death. 32You shall not accept ransom for one who fled to his city of refuge to return to dwell in the land, before the death of the Kohen.

33You shall not bring guilt upon the land in which you are, for the blood will bring guilt upon the Land; the Land will not have atonement for the blood that was spilled in it, except through the blood of the one who spilled it. 34You shall not contaminate the Land in which you dwell, in whose midst I rest, for I am HaShem Who rests among the Children of Yisra’el.
